Ceaseless turnover in the job market is called "churning" and many unemployed people feel victimized. This phenomenon about jobs is brought about by many developments and every age seems to search for easy explanations about what's happening in the job market. Every age searches for a new "devil" we can point to and criticize, specifically if I am the one who's lost his job.
A few of the conditions in previous times which have been used to give reasons for job churn include new technologies and inventions that take away jobs from human beings, or the creation of big box stores that push mom-and-pop places out of business. As time goes on, new services and science bring in new ways, more economical ways, to do old, familiar tasks, in turn taking old jobs down the tubes.
A recent "devil" was outsourcing or the procedure of sending American jobs and tasks overseas into other job markets where labor is less extravagant. We can't blame firms and employers for trying to cut labor costs. But when those jobs go to prisoners or illegal immigrants, there can be an objection.
The current "devil" is a poor economy, a complicated turn of events being influenced by a variety of factors such as mortgage failures, home foreclosures and financial misconduct among big banks and Wall Street firms. To some extent, the American worker has a right to consider him or herself a victim of events. The truth of the circumstance, no matter how victimized you may feel, the bad guy or the devil is not going to rescue you or make things better.
I know a guy that has mailed well over 1000 resumes with not one single bite. It would seem that's all he knows to do in the current job climate. But I've got to ask him how many resumes will he have to send out before he realizes he is doing a churning of your own? You know the old saying: if you don't want to go bananas from doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting different results, then do something different.
So what can a person do that's different? Sure, keep sending out those resumes, but remember this: not only are all jobs ephemeral, but ways of gaining employment also come and go and have a lifespan, which ends with, "The old way just doesn't work anymore."
Here are some suggestions:
- Insert a video of yourself on a website selling yourself and what you're capable of doing for others and in turn, pay.
- Talk to people, in other words, network, instead of only sending out resumes.
- Sit in on job coaching groups and hear what others are doing different.
- Develop a clientele for a skill or service you can provide and become your own boss.
- Have a look at job positions in foreign countries.
- Rather than looking for a job that will be full-time, with full benefits, conceive in terms of jobs that are more like gigs, that is, one time offering of a service or task.
A favorite thing of mine that's different to do is have a coach who can aid you imagine outside the box and be more objective about your situation. Some one else can frequently be more objective than we are about our circumstance and thus think more clearly about new ways to get money in this current new age of employment.
