When I was just a lad I can tenderly remember sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and observing my father receiving a haircut and shave. It is nothing like what it is in the present day. There was an knack to it. The barber really appreciated what he was doing and it was apparent that my father enjoyed it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where guys could socialize amongst themselves.
The haircuts were always so meticulous. My pop would be sitting in one of the countless used barber chairs as the barber would purposely take his time to give the ideal cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the style back then. After the hair cut was a shave. This wasn't a shave as we visualize today, with foam from a can and a molded disposable razor. Rather, the lather was put on with a brush and a straight razor was implemented. It looks scary, but it is the smoothest shave you can ever be given. After the shave was the hot towel that every time felt so pleasant.
The men would principally talk about baseball or politics, though the subject of women would come up often. It was a time to relax and get to know each of us a bit better. Today, when you get a haircut the chatting is kept to a minimum and you often try to get out as soon as you can.
As I walk by the local barber shop and see the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I wonder why this custom has mostly vanished from our traditions. Do people not value a decent hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon chatting with our friends and neighbors seems like a chore? While I am not one to be bitter and only desire for "how things were", I do desire that humanity will recall and respect the way it was just a couple decades ago.
