My husband and I own 2 dogs. They are considered a part of the family and we attempt to include them in many of our activities. This means that we have accumulated a good deal of dog stuff through the years. It is amazing the amount of advertising there is that gets directed towards canine owners & pet owners in general. The marketers know that people love their housepets and are willing to spend a whole lot of money on them. It seems that each holiday season there's more & more dog stuff in the stores.
This past holiday season I couldn't believe my eyes when I was in the accessory a segment of a national department store. At the start I thought there was a new a segment of doll garments that was placed in this section. Upon looking closer I realized that the clothes were for dogs. Along with the garments there were beds, toys, an anti bark collar, designer dishes and other dog stuff. This is a store that doesn't ordinarily have a housepet section. I asked one of the sales clerks when this section of the anti bark collar & other dog stuff had been added. She said that it was part of their holiday operation nation wide. It seems that people were wanting more items that they could buy, not only for their dog, but for the pets of their friends. I jokingly asked if this did not snub cat owners, but I was told that the pet cat merchandize was on the opposite side of the display I was focusing on.
The canine stuff included very elaborate out-fits for the holidays, along with the anti bark collar. Velvet gowns, satin off the shoulder cocktail dresses, & the more traditional knit sweaters. There were also collars that were studded with sequins & stones. I could tell that the sales clerk wasn't thrilled with this new merchandize. I commented that our female dog would certainly prefer precious stones. When I said this she took me over to the fine jewelry counter and showed me a display of precious & semi precious collars. I could not believe what I was seeing. I knew that there were specialty stores & catalogs that handled this sort of dog stuff, but I never believed that it would be featured in a national department store. The clerk mentioned that they had a sizeable display of Halloween costumes in the fall together with special treats for the 4 legged trick or treater's.
I came home & told my husband about the display of canine stuff. He commented that we might be recipients of some of the items, because our family members & friends know that we pamper our dogs. I told him that if we did get some-thing I hoped it would be the fourteen carat gold collar with the pearl pendant.
