Adopting A House-Pet Means More Than Just Taking It To Your Home - It's A Huge Obligation! Are You Willing?
Are you are responsible pet owner? The millions of us that own house-pets believe that we can truthfully say yes to this query. However most of us don't support the humane society or the local animal shelter by adopting animals from the programs. This is the responsible thing to do as a pet owner.
I am not suggesting that every house-pet owner needs to go adopt a house-pet from the shelter, but a financial donation is a fantastic way to insure that these programs can keep going. Also if you're a pet owner that breeds your pet, make sure that the people that adopt a house-pet from you're going to be accountable and will provide a good home to the animal. For example, if it has a problem like excessive barking, what's the plan? Behavior modification? An anti bark collar?
Occasionally this could be hard. When our canine had puppies we had to deny one couple from buying one of the puppies. We have Labrador Retrievers. This is a good example of a breed that could require an anti bark collar because of a barking training issue. They normally have very large litters. Our canine had 12 puppies that we needed to find homes for. The questionnaire asks how many hours a day the animal would be alone, how many hours the owner had to exercise the animal & how often they normally take their animals to the veterinarian.
A number of individuals think that this is a strange form to fill out, but we feel that we have an obligation to the breed to make sure that the people who are going to own the dogs are going to take good care of them. We check out every person that wants to adopt a house-pet from us. We also want to make certain that the animal is spayed or neutered if the owner is not going to be responsible in researching the breeding lines. The retriever breed is very common so it's important to keep healthy blood lines for those of us that want pure-breeds. This can cause bloodlines that are too close which results in dogs that have high medical needs. Our method of asking questions to the individuals who wish to adopt a house-pet from us isn't going to make a massive difference, but at least we feel we're not adding to the problem of weakening the breed.
