A Young Male Needs Counseling For His Acute Depression, Relationship Problems, And For His Alcohol Dependency And Drug Addiction
Roughly eight months ago I had dinner with a forty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship problems, and who is dependent on alcohol and drugs. As explained by Benjamin, it is his alcoholism and drug addiction and his acute depression that has had the most to do with his unceasing relationship difficulties.
As articulated by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship problems and by both of his medical problems that he in essence has little or no reason to achieve much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin managed to finish three semesters of grad school in sports history.
Benjamin's situation makes me question if he is an illustration of an individual who can look in the mirror and perceive his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something meaningful about these problems. Or, conversely, if he a person who has to hit rock-bottom before he gets drug and alcohol addiction rehabilitation that results in lasting sobriety.
It may be asked how rehab would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are more than a few newly discovered physician-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the alcohol and drug detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid an alcohol or a drug relapse. Second, in therapy he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the diverse stages of alcoholism.
Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely nothing helpful about drug abuse and careless and excessive drinking. In a similar way, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy situations is the route to deteriorating health, legal problems, shattered relationships, poor work and school performance, a premature death, and financial difficulties. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him cope with these conditions more successfully and possibly create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally, in counseling he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has manifested.
Since Benjamin lacks the resolve to do much of anything in his life, it is plain to see that he definitely needs a little hope for a more productive existence. And the unfortunate thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the counseling he needs for his intense depression and drug addiction and alcoholism and continue with his treatment program.
Benjamin is clearly too young to be dejected in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from alcohol and drugs through alcohol and drug rehabilitation and get the counseling he requires for his intense depression, he can turn his life around and start living with direction, self-respect, and passion.
More positive relationships, constructive change, self esteem, and a wonderful life are clearly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can become inspired to obtain the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his treatment program, live his life in an alcohol and drug-free and healthy way, and learn how to acquire a more positive attitude about life.
