A Physical Education And Health Instructor Teaches Her Pupils About The Relevant Issues Involved In Alcohol Dependency Signs

Miss Jackson was a health instructor at the most under financed private high school in the local community. Although she had been teaching for only two years, she had already established a reputation as a teacher with a teaching approach that stimulated and motivated the pupils in her class to learn and to think.

For instance, one Tuesday morning she addressed the students in her class and said the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more wind-ranging perspective and we are also going to learn about a number of the most familiar signs of alcoholism from a more specific point of view."

"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will definitely show that a drinker with a drinking problem is a person who is alcohol dependent, but the more signs that a person displays, the greater the probability that she or he is a person who is addicted to alcohol."

Miss Jackson then told the class that each student would be responsible for investigating two alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her results to the other class members via a eight minute oral presentation.

The day after all of the students completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcoholism signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to go over the list and rank the top eight alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After approximately five minutes, Miss Jackson collected the sheets of paper and told her students that after she analyzes the numbers, she will discuss her findings the next school day.

Miss Jackson told her students to look over the information she handed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, just about every student in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was obvious that the students had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism experts. For instance, almost every person in the class had an issue with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, that is, "Do you feel awfully ill when you stop drinking?"

Miss Jackson then told the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcohol addiction. She highlighted the fact that the basic difference between alcoholism and alcohol abuse is the physical addiction that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.

Basically this means that when a person who is alcohol dependent suddenly stops drinking, she or he will go through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the individual who is addicted to alcohol, the students started to grasp the essential difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

A few minutes later the bell rang, indicating the end of the class. Based on the buzz displayed by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson knew that she had motivated and encouraged the students in her class to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
